Wanderlust Wednesday: Christmas in London

Wanderlust Wednesday is a series on the blog where we discuss travel blunders, tips and my insatiable wanderlust. So pack your bags and get ready to discover Christmas in London!

Nothing is as magical as Christmas in London.

The lights have been strung. The halls have been decked. The stockings are hung by the chimney with care. And in the stores shoppers will gladly tackle you for that last iPad sitting on shelves so bare.  It must be Christmas, the most wonderful time of the year.

Even in San Antonio with our giant cowboy boots that sparkle through the night, Christmas is a magical season. But, somehow, San Antonio’s magic just can’t compare to the magic of Christmas in London.

So today I thought I would add on to my list of things to do in London by sharing some of London’s best Christmas treats.

Trafalgar Square Christmas Tree

Each year the city of Oslo gives Britain a giant Norwegian Christmas tree as a token of friendship and gratitude for Britain’s help during WWII. During the holidays, the tree can be seen front and center in Trafalgar Square where it is lit in a ceremony full of the pomp and circumstance that only the Brits can truly do right. So join in the time honored tradition and make sure to stop by to admire this beautiful tree.

Christmas Lights in Soho

There’s nothing that says Christmas in the city like the hustle and bustle around Soho. Regent and Oxford Streets are filled with shoppers filling their arms with Christmas gifts, while above them twinkling lights shine through night. They are some of the most magical sights in the city during the holidays. But when you’re oohing and ahhing over the lights on Regent Street don’t forget to take a stroll down Carnaby Street to check out their funky themed lights. This year’s theme is robins!

London Christmas, London Ice Skating

Ice Skating

It’s this time of year that ice skating rinks pop up all around London in some of the most amazing locations. You can live out your ice princess dreams in front of a castle or next to the Tower of London. Or you can spend a romantic night gliding arm in arm with the one you love beneath the glowing Christmas lights at the National History Museum. The possibilities are endless and the fun never-ending!

Christmas in London, London Christmas Markets
Christmas Markets

Some of the best holiday shopping can be completed at the Christmas markets that fill the city of London. There you can find the perfect gift for the foodies, fashionistas, Christmas-lovers, and picky people in your life. Plus, the markets are uber festive making the shopping trip that much more fun!

Winter Wonderland

Winter Wonderland has to be my favorite place in the city during the holiday season. There’s something for everyone! Shoppers can knock out their Christmas list in the market. Thrill seekers can test their gag reflex on rides. Couples can dance to live music or roam hand in hand through the lights. And Santa is completely within bribing distance! Now you can totally enjoy all that mulled wine and cider without worrying about getting on the naughty list. Plus, any place that has a candy and food selection like Winter Wonderland is okay in my book!

Pantomimes

Pantomimes are a great Christmas tradition for families and big kids alike. Children will love the audience participation, while adults will enjoy the comedic nature. And quite frankly, adults, you too will be shouting and participating with complete enthusiasm. I know I did during Peter Pan because I do believe in fairies! Though maybe that was my Peter Pan syndrome acting up. (I don’t ever want to grow up!)

Christmas Carolers in London, London at Christmas

Christmas Carolers

An evening of carols is a fun and free way to get into the Christmas spirit. And London is full of Christmas spirit. You can find beautiful and grand performances at places such as Westminster Abbey and St. Paul’s Cathedral. Or you can attend smaller caroling services at numerous venues around the city such as the Trafalgar Square tree.

What are some of your favorite things to do around your town during the holidays?

I’ve never been to London during the Christmas season — close, but not quite — but this post has me yearning to see it in action! Looks beautiful and whimsical! I miss the spirit that Europe embodies during this season, for sure!
