One of the main problems with living in the big city is the lack of greenery around town. Not that Texas is known for its greenery, but it’s still nice to be able to get back to nature. Luckily, there’s a fix for that right in the center of town – the San Antonio Botanical Garden, 33 acres of lush foliage and colorful flowers just waiting to be enjoyed. The best part is that it’s often overlooked by tourists, so most days the garden can be claimed as your own personal sanctuary.
The garden boasts a conservatory, formal gardens, native plants and plants from all over the world. However, my favorite part of checking out all the nature porn has to be reading about the uses for each plant. Did you know there’s a plant used in Asia to get rid of freckles?!
Whether you’re visiting the garden alone or with family, they make sure to have a little bit of something for everybody. Recently, their family attractions included large birdhouses around the garden for kids and adults to explore. I’m pretty sure if Big Bird was in the market for a house these would be at the top of his list! And at the very least, they provide adequate hiding room for a rousing game of hide and go seek in the garden.
Not only does the Botanical Garden provide a pretty sweet spot for some hide and go seek action, but it also offers tours, classes and family events throughout the year. One of my favorites has to be the Starlight Movies in the Garden where they screen classic movies for free. I always jump at the chance to grab my picnic basket, a bottle of wine and Troy to use as my own personal pillow. I mean, to snuggle. Yea, that’s what I meant.
